It's a little outside of the box and kinda "wishful thinking".

I manage a Joomla website for a music school. Beside the general information there is a members area. Members of the orchestra, after login, can download new music sheets and playbacks to practice. It's all very straight forward. The users just see the categories of the instruments they are playing and so on. After some time more and more members came to me and wanted to use a tablet for practice and concerts and to make things "easier" I'd be nice to download the files they have access to via an app.

Is there anything on the roadmap like this? I'm no programmer, I have no idea about the amount of work it takes to provide a WebDAV server with jdownloads. It works great as it is, but it would be a "nice to have"

Or is there anybody who resolved this with another solution? Another Joomla component?

I tried extplorer. It didn't work with my hosted setup at 1and1...

Right now I'm thinking about a seperate nextcloud and include the data through "external storage" with read-only access...

Any ideas or similar cases?

Maybe could this be a solution for you?

But the demo seems not to work and i could not find the download link for the free (single user) version.

I already looked into that app.
At first it looks promising. You have to create an account to get the demo version for one user.
The app didn't work for me. There is no way to change the data directory to the jdownloads directory. The documentation is very limited and there is no forum for help or to search for information. AND it costs 49$ per year to get updates...

For that price I would want to have a software with more flexibility and a community...

Do you just want to download onto a tablet?  That is not a problem as one can load Firefox or Chrome onto any Androd device, and the iPad types should have the Apple browser.

For example on my Samsung Android based phone when I download an mp3 file it offers me to actually download, or to play it with Google  Play Music or to play it with an app called Music.  With the Music and the Google varieties it appears as if it is playing inside jDownloads.  Both have a pause and both allow moving the cursor bar forward and backward. The Music one is slightly better as it can also abort. The Download option does as it says but on completion offers the two player facilities.

There are many better ones so try searching for 'android music player app' and 'ipad music player app' will give you some idea that all is there!!

Hi Colin,

the website and JDownloads work great on a tablet. Basically everything is good to go for practice and concerts.
To be save at a concert the music sheets have to be on the tablet. It's a little risky to get them directly between songs from the website  ;)

But the users "like to be a little lazy". To get to the files they have to go to the website, lock into the members area, navigate to the files and download them. Or they do it at a computer and transfer them to the tablett afterwards.  So to make it easier for them it would me nice to have an app which has access to the website and downloads the files automatically into a folder. That's the story behind it and how I came to think of WebDAV... as I said before, everything works great as it is, just a "nice to have".

How do the choir members decide which set of scores they need?
You could try again with the Tags - they do now work if your site has been 'cleaned up' with any previously deleted tags.
Or have you explored the Checkbox option where users can select multiple files  to download.  It forms a zip file so they would need an unzip facility

Colin,

basically they always need the "new ones". I tagged every download. The users have the possibility to select the tag for the "winter concert" and have all files listed for that season with a download button next to it.
Right now the tags don't work. Arno wanted to take a look at the database.

Sadly the tag lists don't provide the checkbox and zip function. But it is implemented in the downloads view and is used by the users.

So as said before, for me it works fine on a tablet.
The users just "dream" about a "one click/app" solution which lists the folder/category/files of the instruments they play.
Thanks for your thoughts and different approaches!
