News:

Support for jDownloads 3 has been ended
Since 17 August 2023 Joomla.org has discontinued support for Joomla 3.x. Therefore, we will no longer offer official support for our Joomla 3 jDownloads version 3.9.x from January 2024.
Please update your website to the latest Joomla version (Joomla 4 or Joomla 5) as soon as possible. Afterwards, please update jDownloads to the latest published version. The longer you delay, the more difficult the upgrade process for your website is likely to be.

A question has arisen about the optimum way for people to have restricted access.  The usual way is a combination of jDownloads category and downloads View Access Level rights in conjunction with view access level on the menus.  Of course the jDownloads Categories and the Downloads themselves need the ACL permissions to actually download or create a new download as appropriate for the user group.  This works very well in most situations but it can be onerous if there are a large number of groups required.

Note at time of writing the way jDownloads handles permissions and view access levels is being enhanced so that on creation these are propagated from the parent category in which the new category or download is being created.

The extreme case is where each user needs their own specific set.

There is of course another way based on the Creator of the Download and that is to use the menu item type 'List My Downloads'.  Using this means that only the 'creator' of the download will see it.  This route may need some enhancement as currently the creator name has to be added from the back end.
