News:

Support for jDownloads 3 has been ended
Since 17 August 2023 Joomla.org has discontinued support for Joomla 3.x. Therefore, we will no longer offer official support for our Joomla 3 jDownloads version 3.9.x from January 2024.
Please update your website to the latest Joomla version (Joomla 4 or Joomla 5) as soon as possible. Afterwards, please update jDownloads to the latest published version. The longer you delay, the more difficult the upgrade process for your website is likely to be.

reproduce:
* set folders to be named automatically
* add a category, e.g. "Lösungen"

expected:
* folder on the server: loesungen
* category alias: loesungen

current:
* folder on the server: lösungen
* category alias: lo-sungen

In addition this causes the message "Error: Filename empty after cleaning!" and the backend is visually destroyed - hitting the browser's back button brings Joomla back.

When you will use special characters in category title (as example german umlauts), you need this settings (see pic).
This settings will reduce also the problems with the categories 'batch function'. - But please wait here on the next beta version, this should be published tomorrow.

Perhaps should we rework the description for this options.  :-\

Hi
The recommendations to get the naming you wanted are to turn off utf-8 support and use transliteration.  In this case transliteration means that German characters with an umlaut are converted to standard ascii equivalent without the umlaut.  Most European languages are the same in this regard.  For example in French both the e acute and the e grave become e.

The main problem is often the host server file system.  A very common file system for servers is cPanel.  This is not always configured for utf-8.  For example see link below
http://kb.siteground.com/how_to_change_the_language_for_cpanel/

So yes we should change the descriptions to really emphasise the need to check with the hosting site before switching to utf-8  directory names (categories) and filenames (downloads) as all sorts of 'challenges' may occur.  It may also be that some internals of Joomla! are not yet utf-8 "friendly" for example

Hi Colin,
perhaps can you add this description to the jD documentation?  ;D
Very useful for many users.  8)

I have now changed in next beta the default settings for this options.
So is in the future only activated after installation the 'auto folder name creation' and the 'Remove/Change special characters in name' option.
