How to switch layout for downloads

I think I can switch the layout for download  but can't figure out how to do it.

Yes you can switch layouts.  Go to the jD Control panel and select Layouts from the left hand panel.This shows all the layout types.  Ususally it is the Downloads or Download Details sections that most often changed The current layout is shown as active.To change to another one put a tick in the select box and the click on the Activate button.
