News:

Support for jDownloads 3 has been ended
Since 17 August 2023 Joomla.org has discontinued support for Joomla 3.x. Therefore, we will no longer offer official support for our Joomla 3 jDownloads version 3.9.x from January 2024.
Please update your website to the latest Joomla version (Joomla 4 or Joomla 5) as soon as possible. Afterwards, please update jDownloads to the latest published version. The longer you delay, the more difficult the upgrade process for your website is likely to be.

Hi Colin

Thanks for the offer of help. I must have misread your first post. So, again, I have started from scratch again. Deleted from Joomla and PHPMyAdmin. Reinstalled, added categories, started adding files via jDownloads | Downloads, assigning them to their respective categories.

After uploading all the files/making downloads, I added "Latest Upload" modules to each of the teacher pages relating to their class only. Some are showing, some aren't. I haven't tried editing.

Hi
Are you happy with the Permissions/view access?  I could check that out for as I have helped others on that topic.  I had looked earlier today but there were no Downloads so I now know why :)

Colin
PS have sent you a PM

I'm also having a horrible time getting the modules to display on the pages I want. Take this page - http://www.atonementlutheranschool.org/preschool/kinderbridge - works fine. However, for example, take this page - http://www.atonementlutheranschool.org/admissions/documents-and-forms - cannot get the module set to this page to show though you can see it's made space for itself. The module for this page was created by making a copy (Save as Copy) from the module showing correctly on 1st page linked.

Now, if I set the module from the first page to show on the 2nd page it will show, but the module that should show still does not.

Has anyone managed to have a look at the site? It's been over a week and I'm having a job fending off my client.

Hi
I have found the problem!  The Latest Module was intended to the Latest Downloads from category Documents & Forms.  But category Documents & Forms was not published.  So I tried to publish and found it had no corresponding Directory.

So I think some one had deleted the Directory but of course the information was still in the database.  There wwas at sometime some Downloads associated with category Documents & Forms but the actual files had of course disappeared when the directory was deleted.

To clean up the next step was to delete the Downloads using The Downloads panel from the backend.  This of course gave the error message that the relevant file could not be deleted.  That is the delete operation gave an error as it cannot delete something that is not there!!

So I have deleted the associated Downloads using the Downloads Panel.  I have also re-created the Documents & Forms category and added as test download.

I also modified the relevant Latest Module to appear on the page related to Admissions - General  as I could not find Admissions - Documents and Forms.

I also found some other Categories and Downloads in the same shape so I deleted those as well.  I will send PM with the names.  Obviously there was some mixup.  Basically one should not attempt to create/modify/edit/delete Directories or Files directly as it puts the database out of sync, and will generally have a disastrous effect on permissions as they are all interelated with several database tables.

So I think all is solved.

Thanks for all your help Colin, but it's still not working properly. It's still impossible to delete from the front end. Still no warning and the page changes after clicking delete but the file still displays on the front end.

Are you meant to be able to delete files or downloads from the front end? It seems not.

Go here - http://www.atonementlutheranschool.org/admissions/documents-and-forms - and try to delete "Test". It doesn't happen.

Hi
I only looked at the module problem!!
You asked
QuoteAre you meant to be able to delete files or downloads from the front end? It seems not.

The answer is yes jD will delete the file in a Download, and also Upload a replacement file from the front end. This requires the user group having Edit Permission for the relevant top level category etc. Further one can delete an entire dDownload from the font edit if Delete permission has been granted.

On your site a file can be deleted from a Download.  But for some reason I do not as yet understand on your site a replacement cannot be uploaded.  Similarly the entire Download cannot be Deleted.

I have looked at file permissions and they seem normal but I am a bit unsure who is the directory and file owner.  Have you set up some extra 'protection' or similar on the database?  Have you set up something that inhibits access to database from front end?

Deleting Downloads works at the Back End.

Colin
PS I do not think this is not a jD fault as thousands of users are not having this problem!

Not that I'm aware of. Just installed Joomla, and various components (including jDownloads) without altering permissions. I do have ADminTools from Akeeba installed. Possible it may be interfering - I don't know enough to comment intelligently.

Hi Colin

I just noticed that http://www.atonementlutheranschool.org/school/middle-school-5-8/grade-5-6 is not displaying the jDownloads module, though the space is reserved for it. Same goes for http://www.atonementlutheranschool.org/admissions/general-details

EDIT: I found that, but uploadign a file from the frontend, the module displayed. I expected it to collapse that space if there was no downloads to display.

Hi
That is a template issue not a jD issue.

I still cannot delete files/downloads from the frontend. Is this being looked at?

I understand not really all what you have discussed with Colin before. But a small hint about the terms:
1. you can in the frontend delete the file from a "Download" with the small symbol behind the file name (pic 1)
2. you can in the frontend delete the "Download" (incl. file) with the button on the top. This button is only visible when the user has the correct permissions to do this - pic 2
3. you can in the frontend update the file when you select another file from your PC.

What exactly is now still your problem?
