Issue
Being able to edit the main language file is a bad thing because:

• A user can remove required strings, forget and then blame the developer
• Updates will wipe out the changes

Solution

• Users should be using the Joomla Language override sytem
• remove the language file edit option in JDownloads

Hi,
Many users find the Joomla! override system daunting. 
Yes there is a danger people will just see the raw string name if they delete a string or change the string name incorrectly. For example if the string COM_JDOWNLOADS_ACCESS="Access" was deleted then the user would see COM_JDOWNLOADS_ACCESS  rather than Access.
Also as you say an update might overwrite if there is a 'developer' change in the file
But it is very easy forusers to make changes initially before making them permanent.

if this file has any changes, any jDownloads update will wipe their changes out.

I also think if they cannot use the override system they should not be touching anything.
