News:

Support for jDownloads 3 has been ended
Since 17 August 2023 Joomla.org has discontinued support for Joomla 3.x. Therefore, we will no longer offer official support for our Joomla 3 jDownloads version 3.9.x from January 2024.
Please update your website to the latest Joomla version (Joomla 4 or Joomla 5) as soon as possible. Afterwards, please update jDownloads to the latest published version. The longer you delay, the more difficult the upgrade process for your website is likely to be.

I started a thread at http://www.jdownloads.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=150 but that is locked.

The problem mentioned there still exisists and it is pretty massive. Since I cannot set a parent category with allowed sub categories, the user sees ALL my categories ... that is a privacy nightmare! Is there a solution for that?

cheers

There is a bug in create downloads that shows all the categories so that the user can select any one.  It should be limited to those categories that the User Group has View Access.  I understand that this is being worked on.

If you are talking about which categories can be seen by different user groups in say List All Categories then there is a solution.  I have a reasonably extensive example in the documentation
see http://www.jdownloads.net/documentations/item/setting-up-restricted-access-with-multiple-user-groups?category_id=30

A simpler article is http://www.jdownloads.net/documentations/item/how-to-create-a-private-category?category_id=30

The method is based on using the View Access Level in the categories and downloads.

Note at this time the Category and Downloads Permissions and Access Levels do not cascade down.  I anticipate that this state may change.  Actually the ACL Permissions are quite satisfactory, it is the Access Levels that really need to cascade.
