Importing jDownloads categories and files with IDs preserved

Hello,
Is there a way to bulk import jDownloads categories and downloads? Ideally, I would like to preserve the original IDs.

I'd like to write a migration script from another database/software, and since we have a lot of existing references, keeping the IDs is important.

In theory I could just insert directly into the database, but the #__assets table complicates things. What I'm looking for is whether there is an API, a helper class, or maybe even an existing import solution that I can use.
