Downloading files straight from Downloads view

At present, in order to download an actual file, it is necessary to click the Download button in the Downloads view, and then click a second Download button in the Summary view (alternatively one can click the file name or icon in the Downloads view, which adds yet another stage). I would really like to simplify this process so that the Download button in the Downloads view actually obtains the file. I hoped this might be possible by modifying the Downloads Layout, replacing {url_download} with {download_link}. This did not work.

Is there any way of achieving the simplification I'm after, short of modifying code?

Yes there is
In Options - FrontEnd tab srcoll down to the Download Sequence section
Set 'Activate direct-downloading' to Yes and 'View Download detail page' to No
