Different layout for different categories

I have multiple categories, all are displaying in simple list mode, however on some categories, due to the nature of the downloadable files (Change control) I need there to be the details link to take them to the details page, and on other categories where the details is not required I dont want it to be visible.

I have the layout with details button all working, but I now dont know how I can specify that one link to one category uses layout A and all others use Layout b?

And please get a better Captcha, I can hardly read what it gives me

thank you for your feedback; I hope I have understood your request correctly:

1. You would like two different behaviours for each category 
- Category A: Clicking on 'Details' should work as before. 
- Category B: Clicking on 'Details' should work differently (different layout/different workflow).

Please describe exactly how variant B should work (e.g. different way of calling up details, different layout, direct download, etc.).
Then I may be able to suggest a specific, straightforward configuration or implementation.

2. The captcha currently displayed is difficult to read.
   A quick note on the captcha for context: 
   jDownloads does not include its own CAPTCHA system, but uses the CAPTCHA plugin configured in Joomla. 
   If the CAPTCHA is difficult to read, you can switch to a different CAPTCHA method in Joomla or adjust the CAPTCHA settings.
