Title: File will not delete
Post by: trogladyte on 23.02.2016 17:22:22
I've read the dox and can't see where I'm going wrong.

I uploaded the file.

I have Super Admin access.

Log into the frontend, navigate to file, click, click pencil, select delete. The screen refreshes but I'm not asked to confirm if I want to delete (surprised at that - perhaps I turned that off somewhere). However, even though the file is gone in the overview, when I go back to the page it's still there.

http://www.atonementlutheranschool.org/admissions/documents-and-forms - 2nd file in the download area.

Hi,
you should get a message when the Download was succesful deleted.
Have you get this?

No I didn't, which surprised me. I thought I'd had it appear before, but not this time. Do you want me to send you login details?

I have now checked your backend but can not find a problem with settings or something else.
So i will check it again here. Until we have found a solution you should use the delete function in backend.

Edit:
i have it tried here with our test installations and the delete function works as expected. See pic.

Can it be that the core module for function result messages is not a part from your template? Or deactivated in backend?

Normally must you see always a message (succesful or error).

Sorry I don't understand your last post. What core module? Part of jDownloads or Joomla? Are you still investigating?

I know the delete works as I had it working previously. However, it isn't now. I successfully uploaded a small image file and it displayed immediately. Tried to delete it and I get the same issue. No warning, but appears to delete as, when I look in the overview, it's not there. However, navigate back to the page and it still shows.

I downloaded jDownloads again and reinstalled (did not delete the existing copy). Still fails. For now, I have unpublished the items and they're no longer showing, but I need this to be client driven. I don't want to be messing with their files ongoing.  Thanks.

No problem as this was not the reason.  ;)

Could it be that your files have wrong CHMOD settings on the server?

No clue - you tell me from the screenshot - dl03.jpg

There is something REALLY screwy going on. dl01 and dl02 show a file called Emergency Info 2016 as existing, but nothing can be done to it from the front end and, as dl03 shows (Filezilla screenshot) it doesn't even appear to exist in the directory.

Hi
The displays as shown in dl02.jpg for example are actually created mainly from information in the database. That is the pictures you are showing are consistent with the information in the database.

Now if at sometime you had deleted the file using say the front end edit function this does delete the file part of the Download but not the rest of the Download. So what you are showing is compatible with the information show from your File Zilla screen shot in dl03.jpg.  The information in the database will be that there is no file so hence there is no download button.

Note when the file, not the Download, was deleted you could have been intending to load another version of the file.

Please see the two attached pictures which explain the situation.  In essence it is all about the Joomla! permissions associated with the users User Group and the permissions inherited by the Downloads from their categories.

Note that two of the other files do not have Download buttons so in the absence of other info I can only assume that they do not have Download Permission.  This could have been through use of the Deny permission in another User Group or some other reason.

Sorry - that makes no sense. There's something wrong. I'm getting no warning when I ask it to delete which is, from my experience and from Arno's posts, what is meant to happen. So something is broken.

I have to move on, as the client is demanding a fix which I can't give them with jDownloads.

FYI, I completely uninstalled the component and modules, deleted all files and folders, and deleted all entries in MySQL, then reinstalled. Uploaded 2 test files, one from the admin, one from the frontend. Couldn't manipulate from the frontend once uploaded at all. Delete did something without a warning (as before), but the file remained (as before).

I'm done with this. I don't know if it's the component, my installation or my template, but I can't waste any more time on it.

Hi
I sure it can be resolved.  The initial symptoms you indicated were that you were deleting and not getting a message, and that the deletion of the file was not occurring  But I think you were deleting a file and it was being deleted as your evidence suggests, but you were not deleting the Download so that is a different scenario.  The abilities you want are standard in jD, and yes there maybe an interaction with something else.

Please understand that a Download is not just the file that will be downloaded.  So the scenario I described is perfectly consistent with the pictures you showed.

Certainly when a file is deleted from a Download one should get an error message saying  File Deleted or similar. But I do not think the apparent absence this is an intrinsic jD problem.  If it is not solved now it is likely to come back and bite again.  From my recollection there is only a narrow green bar in your case, or perhaps nothing.  In that situation the message may be being shown logically but is essentially not visible.  So somewhere the fontsize or line height or some other css styling may have been overridden.  I was offering to look at that sort of thing as I have met that in other situations, templates, etc., etc.

Hi Colin

Thanks for the offer of help. I must have misread your first post. So, again, I have started from scratch again. Deleted from Joomla and PHPMyAdmin. Reinstalled, added categories, started adding files via jDownloads | Downloads, assigning them to their respective categories.

After uploading all the files/making downloads, I added "Latest Upload" modules to each of the teacher pages relating to their class only. Some are showing, some aren't. I haven't tried editing.

Are you happy with the Permissions/view access?  I could check that out for as I have helped others on that topic.  I had looked earlier today but there were no Downloads so I now know why :)

I'm also having a horrible time getting the modules to display on the pages I want. Take this page - http://www.atonementlutheranschool.org/preschool/kinderbridge - works fine. However, for example, take this page - http://www.atonementlutheranschool.org/admissions/documents-and-forms - cannot get the module set to this page to show though you can see it's made space for itself. The module for this page was created by making a copy (Save as Copy) from the module showing correctly on 1st page linked.

Now, if I set the module from the first page to show on the 2nd page it will show, but the module that should show still does not.

Hi
I have found the problem!  The Latest Module was intended to the Latest Downloads from category Documents & Forms.  But category Documents & Forms was not published.  So I tried to publish and found it had no corresponding Directory.

So I think some one had deleted the Directory but of course the information was still in the database.  There wwas at sometime some Downloads associated with category Documents & Forms but the actual files had of course disappeared when the directory was deleted.

To clean up the next step was to delete the Downloads using The Downloads panel from the backend.  This of course gave the error message that the relevant file could not be deleted.  That is the delete operation gave an error as it cannot delete something that is not there!!

So I have deleted the associated Downloads using the Downloads Panel.  I have also re-created the Documents & Forms category and added as test download.

I also modified the relevant Latest Module to appear on the page related to Admissions - General  as I could not find Admissions - Documents and Forms.

I also found some other Categories and Downloads in the same shape so I deleted those as well.  I will send PM with the names.  Obviously there was some mixup.  Basically one should not attempt to create/modify/edit/delete Directories or Files directly as it puts the database out of sync, and will generally have a disastrous effect on permissions as they are all interelated with several database tables.

So I think all is solved.

Thanks for all your help Colin, but it's still not working properly. It's still impossible to delete from the front end. Still no warning and the page changes after clicking delete but the file still displays on the front end.

Are you meant to be able to delete files or downloads from the front end? It seems not.

Go here - http://www.atonementlutheranschool.org/admissions/documents-and-forms - and try to delete "Test". It doesn't happen.

Hi
I only looked at the module problem!!
You asked
QuoteAre you meant to be able to delete files or downloads from the front end? It seems not.

The answer is yes jD will delete the file in a Download, and also Upload a replacement file from the front end. This requires the user group having Edit Permission for the relevant top level category etc. Further one can delete an entire dDownload from the font edit if Delete permission has been granted.

On your site a file can be deleted from a Download.  But for some reason I do not as yet understand on your site a replacement cannot be uploaded.  Similarly the entire Download cannot be Deleted.

I have looked at file permissions and they seem normal but I am a bit unsure who is the directory and file owner.  Have you set up some extra 'protection' or similar on the database?  Have you set up something that inhibits access to database from front end?

Deleting Downloads works at the Back End.

Colin
PS I do not think this is not a jD fault as thousands of users are not having this problem!

Not that I'm aware of. Just installed Joomla, and various components (including jDownloads) without altering permissions. I do have ADminTools from Akeeba installed. Possible it may be interfering - I don't know enough to comment intelligently.

Hi Colin

I just noticed that http://www.atonementlutheranschool.org/school/middle-school-5-8/grade-5-6 is not displaying the jDownloads module, though the space is reserved for it. Same goes for http://www.atonementlutheranschool.org/admissions/general-details

EDIT: I found that, but uploadign a file from the frontend, the module displayed. I expected it to collapse that space if there was no downloads to display.

That is a template issue not a jD issue.

I understand not really all what you have discussed with Colin before. But a small hint about the terms:
1. you can in the frontend delete the file from a "Download" with the small symbol behind the file name (pic 1)
2. you can in the frontend delete the "Download" (incl. file) with the button on the top. This button is only visible when the user has the correct permissions to do this - pic 2
3. you can in the frontend update the file when you select another file from your PC.

What exactly is now still your problem?

Hi Arno

As I said to Colin, I see what you show in Pic 1, but clicking the delete button does not give a warning popup and, though the screen refreshes, NOTHING is deleted - not the file nor the download link. A user is then taken to the Overview screen.

Even though I am a Super Admin, I have never seen what you show in Pic 2 - ever.

When you click on the delete button you will not get a warning popup, but you will comes back to the "overview" page again and should see a message like this in my pic below.
When you see not this message must anything be wrong in your case.

Can you send me login data for your backend via PM?

i have found out, that the assigned file can be deleted without problem (see pic).

The other problem is not so easy. Also with activated debug function can i not get any error message. But i will check it more.

Interesting. That button, which has never been there before, has miraculously appeared and I was able to click it and get the message "File deleted". When trying to download the file now it says that it's only a simple document not a file. So we have 1/2 the issue fixed.

However, when trying to delete (I guess the link) via the "Delete" button (in my case the yellow button) it's clickable but it does nothing.

For ease of use, one button (ring) to rule them all would be preferable. So one "Delete" button deletes the file and the link in one action. Having 2 will just confuse the client.

Exactly.

In your special case could be this useful. But not for many others.

I will now try to find the other reason for your problem.

On your website exist any problem with the user permissions.
- can it be, that you have changed here the permissions with the Admin Tools Professional?
- see the 2 pics from the backend.
- you should install the newer version from the Admin Tools (use for it the install button)
- check then the permissions configure option from the Admin Tools (i have here not the permissions to do it)

You should also install the newest releases from your installed extensions.
- check here the update status (see the third pic)

Updates are done, the problem persists. Permissions have not been changed via Admin Tools.

Title: Re: File will not delete
Post by: Arno on 22.03.2016 00:47:47
Normally should have the super user all permissions. But this is not really the reason in your case. So any extension seem to modify or manipulate it. Or your asset db table is not correctly.

But i can check (and repair) this with the ACL Manager extension. So i must install this for a 30 minutes. Is this okay for you?

I have now used the ACL Manager to repair 28 wrong permissions settings in the ACL. But all this has not  solved your problem.

Fact is, that nobody else from many thousand other users has this problem. So it seems to be a real challenge.
Maybe is the reason a system plugin. I will check also this tomorrow.
