Hi at JDownloads,
We would like to use JDownloads for this Simple download structure - simply because JDownloads seems to be the best Joomla Download extension available.
1. The ability to insert simple {code snippets into articles} that download a single file (PDF) from a category (fixed).
2. The ability to display all downloads in a category view (fixed standard menu).
3. The option to remove the info table on the category view.
4. The ability for Mass download (select all or some) on all files in the displayed category. I'm having difficulty understanding the checkbox for download in a category.
5. After the summary page (download) - the ability to add additional custom fields to the Inquiry form.
6. The option for the Inquiry form to appear in a lightbox/modal so that users stay on the page (less important).
Could you give me a little hint if this can be achieved with JDownloads or maybe a completely different workaround, just so we can keep JDownloads as default as possible for updates?

Hi Ulric,
I think most of the things listed are possible with jDownloads 4. Only points 5 and 6 are currently not (yet) possible. However, such a solution is planned for the summary page in one of the coming versions.

Standard Category layout does not come with Checkboxes for mass download, as I see it. How to set it up?

Only the Downloads layouts can have checkboxes. The category layout is more or less just the frame around it.
But you should also find about this examples.
The info table is also a part from the Downloads layout.

It's really really good with custom HTML layouts and code snippets, really powerful tool, as opposed to template overrides.
We have this challenge
We have activated PHP mailer in Joomla global configuration (It works, testmail)
We have enabled Email Configuration for Downloads in jDownloads settings
We have written a recipient email in jDownloads Email Configuration settings
We have modified "Compact Files Layout with Checkboxes v3.9" under layouts
We get this error after completing the Inquiry form
