Hi
Will try to help
As I understand it You have a file on the same server as jDownloads but it is not a 'regular' jD Download. So external file is the correct way.
But fails on some browsers.  Hmm!
Could you outline the structure of the link eg was it  like https:///www.yoursite.com/some_directory/filename.pdf
Or was it http rather than https?

You may need to see if the different browsers are behaving differently  sometime one can get away without the www.site.com but for universality best to use the full url

:) Yes exactly - first time I made myself understood immediately

The server is still on http (no https for the moment) and Yes the file structure is as you said, but ... the "External File Link" is entered as relativ! Adding the full URL is the solution  :D
I you want  to investigate this issue ... The site is public, if you want I can give you the URL (I don't know if it is allowed to post an URL is this forum)
One more detail: on the page with the Error, if I add the extension .pdf to the link, the file opens normally.
But for the moment you made my day - thanks very much for your help
