I use Wordpress a lot.
Recently I have started using Multisite, which is great.
I have a client though that wants to use something else.
I am looking at others, Drupal for instance.
Any thoughts?

I?ve used both for years. I really like how I can login to WP and see which plugins need to be updated. Click a button and I am good to go. Maintaining my Joomla sites was always the tough part. I found myself always taking it down to update a MOD/plugin/COMponent. Even with the latest Joomla with the builtin installer, it isn?t as smooth as WordPress.
Here are few points you need to look into?
1. How smooth/easy is it to update the core part of the CMS and its many third party extensions.
2. When something is removed, how ?clean is the install?. i.e. You can pretty much through away an app on the Mac away and know that your system is pretty clean. Whereas install an app on Windows, and you have 100s of little files everywhere. There are utilities for both to help remove 100% of left over files? alas?. Anyways, in the CMSs I have used, this always seems a week point. You install stuff over the years, remove it, update it? and over time, you?ll need to do a complete refresh as junk builds up? sometimes causing stuff to go bad.
3. How efficient is the database schema. Some CMS I have used make their databases bloat so quickly. For example, add a custom field to a post and ALL posts have that custom field attached, where they use it or not. Your DB balloons!
4. How ?standards compliant? is the ?core output? I don?t know if it is still an issue on Joomla, etc, but I recall that you could get a nice XHTML template but some of the html the CMS itself spits out was very 80s. You?ll go crazy trying to get it to be compliant.
It would be good to compare:
Joomla, Drupal, WordPress AND Expression Engine.

I have always built my websites with Wordpress and although i have heard of Joomla i have never got round to using it. It is reminds me of that i have always used a conventional laptop and heard of Mac laptops but never got round to purchasing one that is until i took the plunge and purchased a Mac and have to say i have never looked back. So i was wondering would this be the same reasoning for choosing a Joomla platform over a Wordpress platform.

So you are trying to say that Wordpress is still better than Joomla right?
I think WP is more flexible.
I also have a new client that is currently running on the Joomla platform. I have always
used WP and am very comfortable with it. I started researching a little about Joomla and
am not getting very good information. Ive even read where some big news sites like over
1 million unique visitors daily have switched to the WP platform for it's ease of use and
great support. I hoping I can convince the new client to let me make the switch which then
will create a new topic how to easily switch from Joomla to WP.

I myself prefer WP. But joomla has it own advantages. RIght now Im doing multi-sites so Im sticking with WP. It's great and easy to use.
I'm just starting to use multi site with wordpress. Not my favourite thing in the world to mess about with tbh, I prefer to actually write content for the sites than mess around with backend setting up the domains etc.
I just Joomla aswell and I think its a lot like the pc mac argument someone mentioned above. It'll rage on forever with some on one side and some on the other, but its all personal choice at the end of it and what you want to use it for. My suggestion would be try them both and stick with the one you prefer, solves everyones issue.
Bascially Wordpress is originally used for blogging, and Joomla is for all around CMS system, but the development of Wordpress from blog into flexible CMS(through plugins) makes it so popular. If you have the freedom to choose your CMS, you must look into the purpose. If the website is more into blogging/news/articles system, then use Wordpress, if you are just managing few pages and more into in-box flexibility of the CMS, then go for Jooma. Wordpress is quite buggy sometimes if you will use it for other purpose, like membership system, store etc. Wordpress is also quite vulnerable to some virus if you left it unsecured.
Let us sum it this way,
Wordpress - Blogging
Joomla - Content Management
Drupal - Memberships
Magento - Store
Of course, you can use the CMS in other way you like as long as you have the expertise to modify it, but if you will use them in their main purpose, then you will get less bug and issues.

Since my post I have started using ManageWP, which is awesome.
Just one log in to ALL my WP sites and it tells me which of them needs updating, be it Wordpress, Plugins, Database, Spam etc.
It also monitors my sites for up time and emails me when they are down, and I can monitor my SEO with it too.
Just a great piece of software.

You can use joomla with his many thousands extensions for (nearly) all situations. ::)
I am a Wordpress fan, I have a few sites that use Joomla and others that use WP. But wordpress is definitely the better choice if seo is your main goal. In Joomla, seo friendly urls are quite complex and must be activated, other hand WP automatically creates seo friendly urls. That's probably why Google prefers WP over joomla.
We experimented with a a few CMSs before opting to work with WordPress. Joomla is no doubt an excellent CMS, however, I do feel that WordPress has a very vibrant community of users and developers. The number of plugins available is excellent, and the support forums have all the answers to the problems you may encounter. Our designers love the flexibility of WordPress to design the way they want. More over we feel that it is designer friendly rather than developer friendly. The end user also feels comfortable using it. These are just a few advantages, I feel, WordPress has over other Content Management Systems.
I agree. I have been experimenting with joomla and wordpress quite a bit over the course of the last several months and I have to say that I really enjoyed being able to find the answers very quickly by visiting the many support forums. I also really like the variety of plugins available for wordpress users. This is not to say that Joomla is a quality CMS, just that from my personal experience using wordpress has turned out to be the number one choice for people starting out with building their own website. You can't compare the two. It's like trying to compare Windows with Linux. Windows is more flashy, more user friendly, eye catching, but Linux is better with regards to performance and security. Wordpress is better for the search engines, and Joomla simply looks nicer and can do some really nice visuals. It depends on what you want from a website.

You should tell your client wordpress is the best. tell him or her that it's user friendly can be managed easily.

The learning curve on Wordpress is much shorter along with better documentation.

The problem with Joomla! is that my clients find it hard to get used too, they say that the backend is really a mess. That?s what they say, even I already thought them how to use it.

To make it perfectly clear: I have nothing against either system, be it WordPress or Joomla. Both have their own typical advantages. I use them both successfully.
I do not have any experience with Joomla. But one of the advantages of WordPress is that it's the most used by marketers. Much neat plugins are developed to make the life of a online marketer much easier, also when it comes to SEO. I never have seen a plugin or similar feature for Joomla. Or is this because I mainly focus on WP?
One of the flaws obviously of WP is that you always have to keep in mind the security of your website. How is Joomla when it comes to secutiy, hackers etc.?

Joomla, for me is my favorite system to use. Around Joomla 1.5, wordpress was using Wordpress version 2 and Joomla definitely reigned over. Wordpress is a blogging platform, so the needs were never met as compared to using Joomla.
Now, checking back on the recent WP achievements, I have to admit Wordpress is quite the competitor now. By using the Custom fields whether via a plugin or hardcoded into a theme, anyone can achieve a quick configurable app using WP.
Wordpress is definitely simpler to understand for most persons, but I find they're downfall is having much of the site dependent on the theme installed.
With Joomla, once you create or install a Plugin, it works with the corresponding component of the site and changing the theme does not render the plugin useless or clash with similar function names. So, I would definitely stick with Joomla.

I prefer Wordpress seo framework but have been impressed with Joomla's design capability. Tough call but I sided with Wordpress for my work.

I've worked with both Wordpress and Joomla, and I totally rate Wordpress, it's so much easier than Joomla but what it comes down to is the sort of site you are building. The backend of wordpress is so straighforward and there is a plugin for just about anything you can think of and most are free, whereas you tend to have to pay for Joomla plugins a bit more often (again depending on what the site is for). Here's a wee tip, don't ever build an e-commerce site using Joomla as you are required to use a component called Virtuemart which totally sucks big lemons!! ;)

I think joomla is not for seo use , it really great but not with seo , Wordpress great for SEO but just for blogging not for content management, I usually make company web with Joomla but for online marketing I use Wordpress ;D

It really depends what you're trying to do. Wordpress is more user friendly.. So if you're anything like me, its preferable. Drupal and joomla allow you to get more creative if you know what you're doing.
This is a valid question because both are PHP - MySQL-based webapps that run off a database, and perform similar functions. But their aspirations are different: one is a full-on CMS, the other is a 'quick publishing tool' that is designed to get your content online ASAP.

They are both great, however, word press is easier to use and less complicated.
I think Wordpress is so much better. I'm not such a techno guy but I hired(go cheated) someone to do a website for me in the past, I didnt like the layout and what I saw. But maybe it was just the designers problem and not joomla itself.
I think it is what you get used to. I have been using WP for a long time and as I have grown so has it. Most of the big marketers I know use WP, so that might mean something.
Enjoyed this tread on WP v Joomla. It seems to me that it really is based on what you want to use the products for. I handle small sites and have no hassle with WP. As someone mentioned easy to check for plugins and updates. Smoothness is ideal. ::)

I researched both before I created my first website. Hands down Wordpress is easier to use. I'm really happy with it. I've had no problems or regrets.
They're two very different systems so difficult to compare but I've always favoured Wordpress, once you get round the fact it can be so much more than just a blogging platform its incredibly useful.

WordPress is a website engine built on the premise that installing it, running it, and publishing basic content with it should be as quick and simple as possible. Joomla is a different animal, it's for managing and publishing a lot of different content types, in different ways, with all the options a full-scale CMS has, while looking good doing it.
I have been using WordPress for quite some time and all the plugins are great but I am starting to see some of the downsides to scaling. Is Joomla a better solution for websites with large memberships and participation? Since it is a full on CMS, I would have to imagine that customization is wide open?
I used wordpress for years and I could say that their features are nice but if given a chance I would like to try joomla too.
Being pretty new to creating websites, I find Wordpress is definitely the easiest and more friendly platform to use..there is a lot of information on getting started setting up a Wordpress site and with all the plugins and one-step set up inside some hosting packages it certainly cuts out the technical steps...The layout inside of wordpress is logical which makes it easy to add content and change things around on your site.

Wordpress is the current standard for building extensible websites. The wealth of themes, plugins and mods available for the platform is absolutely staggering.
Its because of the mass availability of extensions of high quality and an active paid development community that I choose Wordpress. It makes developing client websites really simple.
So, that's why i prefer Wordpress.
I prefer Wordpress, but to be honest that might be simply because I am more familiar with it, so it seems easier! It has all the features I need anyway! :D

I tried WordPress but it sucks. Creating templates is a pain. You are pretty much screwed if you don't know php. Too much bloat in the html and a very annoying taxonomy issue where you can't have two or more categories with the same name. Joomla on the other hand is much more easy to administrate, to create templates for and is a lot more flexible.

I have only really used Wordpress. Once I find something that works I usually stick to it! Installing software packages is really easy as sometimes use my blogs to promote Amazon products which look fantastic with the right package.
Joomla is good but i prefer Wordpress. And i think Wordpress much better with lots of plugins and other supports.
I've built several websites with WP the last weeks and I love the ease and speed to get a site up. The only problem for me is finding good free templates. I don't know why, but I always end up building a site and then changing templates many times and still being somewhat unsatisfied with it. I think I need to stop being mean and buy a decent theme from Theme Forest or similar.
As we all know that drupal, Joomla and Wordpress are the world most popular CMS but if you compare the three of them with each other. I am sure you gonna find one better than the other in different situations. The point we have to note is what is our need. e.g. WordPress is known for it's SEO value and for creating blogging websites but if we want to create a website not mainly for blogging purpose, you gonna find that both Drupal & Joomla beat it out.
So, you see. It depends on our situation and need but overall WordPress is what I recommend.

Joomla is a fork from Mambo, when developers of mambo desagreed with Miro Corp. They become member of "Open source Matter".
Joomla is a powerful cms with the lack of build-in for 2.0 solutions (comments, forum, etc...), so it is more indicated for brand and corporate site. Anyway i use it for some projects and with all the extensions on JED you can build more or less what you want and Jdownloads (the forum you are on) is one of the advanced one (sincerely like it).
You can easily modify template files to obtain what you like (override technique) but you need to be careful in mantainence.
Wordpress is the open source release of wordpress blogging platform. They smells the business of OS CMS.
That said it is largely used because of its semplicity, but i think the way you manage plugins is very poor. It is more indicated for blogging or sites with few section.
I think there are two kind of user for wordpress:
the lazy one, a not-expert user, who just buy a 30$ template and configure something in 3 workly days;
the advanced one, who is able to hack the CMS and obtain everything.

Drupal is a powerful CMS, maybe the first Open source CMS ever released, who was intended to create a virtual neighborhood community.
Lots of people laments the lack of easy-of-use. I can understand simple user, but... come on, are you really refering to yourself as "developer"? ;D
Drupal is very extensible, easy for mantainance (from the version 7 core is separated from site) and community is working hard to clean the code.
It has some built-in and very advanced function, and it's funny.
It is the best solution for community-oriented sites, as well as for blogging.
But the most important thing you should think about in making your choose is the meaning of Open-source. Why are you choosing and Open-source system?

Joomla is a professional CMS. Full power I would say. It is more difficult to configure and easy to break appart, also there are sections that even a pro does not use or does not know how they work.
Wordpress using is easy, an old man without computer knowledge can learn to use it in a 20 minutes. Instead, in a Joomla installation this guy will ruin everything :)
Wordpress is also a lot more rigid, a lot more simpler, lacks a lot of power if you are a computer geek.
Joomla is the better option for web development. We can easily manage large scale sites by using joomla. It also offers lots of good features.

I tend to use Wordpress which is blogging software that you can do some really cool things with. It has lots of addons, but you can install it, then start blogging or editing pages straight away. Install a theme to give it a look you like. Add pages of text and graphics, or add blog posts. There are a huge number of addon's/themes which you can find and install from the admin interface. Drupal and Joomla are CMS's (Content Managment Systems). These are much more complex to configure, but more flexible. I have very little experience with either of these though. It depends what you wish to do. Do you want a quick and dirty blog/website thats easy to set up and looks nice, or do you want something that's a bit more challenging to learn, but has huge scope once you have mastered it and can be shaped into almost anything.

You can also use demo account of WordPress, Joomla and Drupal via their official websites to see one of them is proper for you. My favorite program is Joomla. Joomla allows you to build a site with more content and structure flexibility than Wordpress offers, but still with fairly easy, intuitive usage.
It is true that Joomla has been considered more complex and in the end better than WordPress for more advance sites however with custom post types and custom fields you can now make really complex and easy to use websites. The best part is that if the client wants a simply website use WordPress. If they want a complex website use WordPress (with custom post types and custom fields). You get my point ;) This way you get the best of both worlds. Simple and complex.
Afraid I disagree. Joomla is undoubted more capable, just about everyone accepts that, and for the webmaster there is a steeper learning curve. However I find Wordpress frustrating as it has a poor editor by comparison and minimal access control. Further one has to keep resorting to adding in html directly.
I run a community site with a lot of entries that are constantly changing. There are editors who only have front-end access who can quite happily make more entries, modify existing ones and so on all without having to know any html at all. They can even add to menus. The only skills are those necessary to run a modern word processor, and to be aware of buttons for adding links. People make entries on the Event Calendar where they can only modify their own entries, and so on. That means as the web master I can concentrate on the technical aspects whilst others keep the info up to date.
Because of the lower initial learning curve for Wordpress then it does attract many web designers, and certainly Joomla could improve in that area. In particular I have found many people have an initial 'challenge' with setting up Joomla menus, but then one can have multiple tailored menus against only the one or two allowed by most Wordpress Themes. But I also suspect that WordPress web designers like it because one has to be able to have a modest knowledge of html and a smattering of css - so the client has to come back to them for updates and so on!!
Of course in any large website such skills are needed no matter what is the base platform. But its actually easier with Joomla
Both are good according to their niche. Joomla is well known when it comes to business website or community websites, while wordpress is well known for blogging platform. When someone will ask about blogging site, the first thing that comes to mind is wordpress. However, when someone ask for business website platform then joomla known for that.
I prefer Wordpress, so many awesome plugin, great amount of themes to choose. Just the best for me :D
My vote also goes to wordpress. Google just loves worpress sites for some reason.
in joomla i belive you have to code well ;D but in case of wordpress u have so many plugins that u can make it more sophasticate in joomla u can code as you wish and build website.
