Special characters in user profile

Hi

I'm able to use special characters æøå in the names of the users. They are saved correctly and shown in the database

When i use these letters in the address field then it gets saved in the database as \u00c6 or similar. Joomle shows these correct afterwards when viewing your profile.
But when i extract the data from the database for other purposes inside Joomla then they are not converted back to æøå. How do i achieve it ?

I know i can do a simple search and replace, but there must be a correct way to do it. Just like Joomla does...
