I'd set everything up originally as no view unless registered, then you can view and download.
I can't remember what I hanged and want to change the system now so it is set up so the public can see the downloads but only registered users can actually download them.

Ideally I'd like the public to see there are downloads and view the "Preview" as well but only registered can download.

Many thanks

Hi
You can control who sees what by setting the View Access to Public but leaving Download Permission as it is.

Thanks Colin,
I changed the public setting for the parent category to download=denied.
But then for registered users it did the same and locked the option!

I'm afraid i'm going to ask for some more noddy advice!

On the upside, i could see the download as public, and it said i needed to be registered to download, but it didn't show the preview.

Edit: thinking about it is preview only for media files, my files are PDF's, and i wanted a publicly available preview of the files (i have created another PDF for the file which has a snippet from the full thing)

Hi
Never use a permission of Denied as it has unexpected effects.  Note everyone of a member of the Public User Group so no one, except Super User which has special 'dispensation', will be able to download because it propagates.  Leave the permissions as they were originally.
There is a totally separate 'box' called Access, which is NOT in the permissions.   It is usually shown just above the Permisions button.  Set the Access box on the top level Category to Public.
You are right about having a separate pdf as a 'taster' for the preview.

Thanks again.
I put the permissions back!
I must write down my settings changes somewhere! Because I have set the category and parent category as public the downloads are still registered so the category showing as empty to public.
If I set the download to public they can download which is not what i want, i don't want the public to download.

Just to clarify the preview I created a preview PDF and uploaded it as the preview file but nothing appears to have happened.

Hi
If it would help I il look at your site so if to do that please send login details etc via PM - click on whitish square with a tail near my name.
Essentially you only need to change the permisions on the top level categories.  Then they will cascade down if the sub cats and the Downloads have inherited as their setting.
You can set all the permissions back to normal using the jD Tools.
