Yes it is done in the layouts. It would help if you gave a picto
ure of what you want edited as there are many possibilities.

I would like to change the home, search and upper icons with my own set, could you explain how to do?

The three standard images are located in directory
/components/com_jdownloads/assets/images
and as you know they are called home_fe.png, search.png and upper.png

The simplest method is to overwrite these images with your own images using say your site Control pane, or your favourite ftp, or say Component eXtplorer
