Translating the latest downloads module I discovered the next thing:
There is something wrong with line 47 in mod_jdownloads_latest.xml:
                 <param name="layout" type="textarea" default="CHAR_BEFORE_RELEASE_DESC" label="Layout" description="Here is the layout definition for the module output." rows="15" cols="50" />
CHAR_BEFORE_RELEASE_DESC is also used in line 27:
                <param name="short_version" type="text" default="v" label="CHAR_BEFORE_RELEASE_TITLE" description="CHAR_BEFORE_RELEASE_DESC"/>
and the description is not in the translation file (and not in a way you use for translation strings).
Have a look at the module in the back-end, you will see.

Sorry for this mistake. It is a field from a prior test release. I have forgotten it to delete before i have published.    
I will publish later today a fixed version.
